Why I started Vintgat
I’m Alida Burden, originally from South Africa. I hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and am currently studying towards WSET Level 3, but my connection to South African wine began long before the qualifications—from working in Stellenbosch tasting rooms to visiting wineries and tasting over the years.
I started Vintgat to make discovering great South African wine simple and enjoyable.
There are brilliant South African wines available in Britain, but knowing where to begin—and which bottles to choose—can still feel overwhelming. I taste extensively and bring together a focused selection of wines I genuinely believe in—bottles I would confidently serve at my own table.
Regions like Stellenbosch and Swartland are producing wines that rival far more expensive European bottles — the quality has long been there, the perception is only starting to catch up.
What I do differently
My aim is simple:

I’ve spent time visiting wine farms and tasting extensively — focused on finding wines people will genuinely enjoy.

What does “Vintgat” mean?
The name comes from Vintner and Windgat — an Afrikaans word for someone slightly confident… maybe a bit cheeky.
That’s intentional.
